The City of Stardust Book Review by Georgia Summers ARC

Updated: Apr 26

Published January 30, 2024

Thank you, NetGalley for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Summary:

Slip into a lush world of magic, stardust, and monsters in this spellbinding contemporary fantasy from debut author Georgia Summers.

For centuries, the Everlys have seen their best and brightest disappear, taken as punishment for a crime no one remembers, for a purpose no one understands. Their tormentor, a woman named Penelope, never ages, never grows sick – and never forgives a debt.

Violet Everly was a child when her mother left on a stormy night, determined to break the curse. When Marianne never returns, Penelope issues an ultimatum: Violet has ten years to find her mother, or she will take her place. Violet is the last of the Everly line, the last to suffer. Unless she can break the curse first.

Her hunt leads her into a seductive magical underworld of power-hungry scholars, fickle gods, and monsters bent on revenge. And into the path of Penelope's quiet assistant, Aleksander, who she knows cannot be trusted – and yet to whom she finds herself undeniably drawn.

With her time running out, Violet will travel the edges of the world to find Marianne and the key to the City of Stardust, where the Everly story began.

My Thoughts:

I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of A City of Stardust.

Summers' debut is a well-written novel about this magical new worlds with fickle gods, a family curse, and magical keys. This debut novel by Georgia Summers initially took me a little while to get invested in this story. I believe this was due to the writing style and the many different point of views Georgia Summer writes from. Once I was invested and got through some of the character development and plot holes, it was an easy read.

I love getting lost in fantasy worlds and this was the perfect read to start the new year. It’s a nice sci-fi magical story that gave me a nice break from the Romantasy genre I have been stuck in lately. The whole book seemed to have a lack of urgency for this very literal deadline Violet and Marianne Everly was up against. If you are a sucker for a good love interest, this one was a classic forbidden romance trope. I still feel like i have some unanswered questions when it comes to the magic system, world building, or the magical keys.

It was an interesting world that reminded me of the Invisible Life of Addie Larue ~ but different. You’ll have to read it to understand. The last 20% of the book is where it all comes together and picks up. If you’re reading it and wondering if you should keep going, the answer is, yes. Keep going you’ll be happy you did. Summers' is an author I will keep on my TBR list for any future books she publishes.
