The Plot – A Deadly Contest for One Single Wish

Ophelia Grimm, a necromancer with powerful death-driven magic, is on a mission to save her younger sister, Genevieve. The only way to do so? Survive the deadly competition inside a cursed manor, where floors of challenges inspired by the circles of hell await her.

The haunted mansion, with its lavish ballrooms and maze of twisting corridors, is as much a character as Ophelia herself. As she faces new monsters, fatal temptations, and lethal trials, the stakes keep rising. Ophelia’s fears and intrusive thoughts are a constant companion, giving readers a deeply personal look into her struggles with OCD.

Adding to the tension is Blackwell, a dangerous phantom and mysterious stranger who offers to guide Ophelia in exchange for years of her life. Their forbidden romance is the beating heart of the story, filled with enough tension and spice to keep you on the edge of your seat.

What I Loved

  • Quick and Easy Read: Phantasma is one of those books where you blink, and suddenly you’re halfway through. The pacing is perfect, and each chapter leaves you wanting more.

  • OCD Representation: I loved how Kaylie Smith depicted Ophelia’s struggles with OCD. It added depth to the main character and felt authentic and respectful.

  • The Romance: The dark attraction between Ophelia and Blackwell is everything you want in a gothic romance. Their steamy romance had me rooting for them, doomed as they seemed.

  • World-Building: The sort of alternative New Orleans setting, complete with paranormal creatures and gothic vibes, was richly detailed and atmospheric. It was easy to visualize every shadow voice, macabre shade of vermilion, and delicate white material of Ophelia’s nightgown.

  • Themes of Family and Sacrifice: Ophelia’s love for her sister and her determination to honor her family legacy after the death of her parent hit me in the feels.
